Saw an american ask another american “why are people in the UK not demanding that they defund the police?”

& like, this is kind of what I mean by frustration at american politics being imported into ours because…we have defunded the police.

The UK was never in the position that some US cities have where the police budget is bizzarely massive compared to other social programs. And over the last 10 years, various policing/law things have been cut alongside other public services, as part of an ideological small-state drive.

That hasn’t made much of a dent in the various ways the police can still be a force for evil, though. And, obviously that money hasn’t been redirected into youth clubs and harm reduction and whatnot. And as per Secret Barrister’s thread, it’s also made justice harder to get; to the extent that one believes that the law can be a good thing, that’s been cut to nothing, so there’s not even a partial good.

So like, is this a slogan that serves activism in the uk? Maybe that’s why nobody’s using it, because it’s not locally relevant (or, not as locally relevant compared to other factors)

Yes!! It’s so frustrating when Americans assume what works for them works for everyone; the issues with UK police (of which there are many) involve working on a policing structure from 1962 that obviously doesn’t work today, the refusal to actively engage with criticism (as we have seen in Cressida Dick’s response to the criticism of the Met’s actions at Clapham Common), and, the biggest problem, the racist/sexist/homophobic culture within the police - in some ways similar issues to those in the US, but with different causes and solutions.

Americans wading in and assuming they know everything without actually understanding the decades that have created these issues actually just makes everything harder, since their (uninformed) opinions are so dominant on social media, that they drown out everything else, and contribute to misinformation.

Reminder that it really doesn’t matter what ways you’re marginalized, if you’re not black you’re just as capable of anti blackness as white cishet people. No amount of “but I’m gay!”, “but I’m trans!”, or “but I’m not white!” changes that.

And being neurodiverse/disabled isn’t an excuse for anti blackness either.

Don’t like this post if you’re not gonna also reblog it.

Boost my voice, don’t just like it for woke points.

I’d fucking love it if white people didn’t use this post to pat themselves on the back. I guarantee that no amount of “don’t people know this already?” or “isn’t this obvious?” will actually make you a good ally to black people.

The only things that will make you a good ally to us is listening to us, boosting our voices, defending us when we need it, calling out your fellow whites when they display overt and/or covert racist behavior, and checking yourself consistently.

my favourite thing about this post is all the non-black people going “and the same goes to black people being xenophobic/prejudiced/etc to (marginalised group)” like thanks for completely deflecting the main issue and proving that you really do hate black people lmao
